A review of MLB.tv, MLB Mosaic, and MLB Extra Innings for the 2007 season
| Summary: Baseball season has never looked better for fans who stick with the same team for life, but who don't stick with the same job and live in the same city for life. With MLB Extra Innings, you can watch almost every baseball game of the season on your television (except those of your local team). With MLB.tv, you can watch or listen to the same games available through Extra Innings and have access to archives of previous games from any computer with high speed internet access. For serious fantasy baseball players, MLB Mosaic raises the bar for your management skills by helping you track and watch all of your fantasy players on the internet with little effort. |

When I was a kid, root for the home team, meant you'd root for the team whose stadium was closest geographically to your house. Nowadays, people move around so much that their home team changes multiple times over the course of their life. However, with globalization, cable tv, internetification, and all that other fancy stuff, people are starting to stick with their favorite teams even when they move, and it's getting increasingly easy to do so.
If you've moved too far away to catch local broadcasts of your team, the best way to follow your favorite team(s) is with MLB.tv, MLB Mosaic, or MLB Extra Innings. I've been a subscriber of MLB.tv and MLB Mosaic for two years (well actually Mosaic didn't come out until the middle of last season). And I've given MLB Extra Innings a good test during a few free previews and at my parents house (my dad subscribes). Here's the low down on these three offerings from Major League Baseball:
- If you have high speed internet (test your bandwidth to be sure)
- AND you have a fast computer
- AND your pretty decent at installing software and messing with computers
- AND you don't mind an occasional software crash or dropped video, sometimes during crucial parts of a game
- AND you don't mind watching games from your computer OR you know how to hook your computer up to your TV
pick MLB.tv or MLB Mosaic
- If you like the easiest to use with the best picture
- AND you don't mind not being able to watch games while you're at work
- AND your cable or satellite service provides the Extra Innings package
pick MLB Extra Innings
- If you're a devote Fantasy baseball player
- AND you are alright with the computer stuff mentioned above
pick MLB Mosaic
READ THIS IMPORTANT BLACKOUT INFORMATION The last thing that you should be warned about before I go into the details of each type of subscription is the Blackout games. Due to broadcast restrictions and contractual agreements with television companies, two types of games are blacked out from all three of these MLB offerings (i.e. you aren't able to watch the games).
